Qualifying Child Requirements

The qualification requirements remain the same under OBBB:

✅ Must Meet All Tests

  • Age: Under 17 at end of tax year
  • Relationship: Son, daughter, stepchild, foster child, sibling, or descendant
  • Support: Did not provide over half their own support
  • Residence: Lived with you more than half the year
  • Dependent: Must be claimed as your dependent
  • Citizenship: US citizen, national, or resident alien

💰 Income Limits (Phase-out)

  • Single/HoH: Starts at $200,000 AGI
  • Married Filing Jointly: Starts at $400,000 AGI
  • Married Filing Separately: Starts at $200,000 AGI
  • Phase-out rate: $50 per $1,000 over limit

Examples & Savings

Family with 2 Children

• Two qualifying children (ages 8 and 12)

• Family AGI: $150,000 (under phase-out)

• Previous CTC: 2 × $2,000 = $4,000

• OBBB CTC: 2 × $2,200 = $4,400

Additional benefit: $400 per year

Single Parent with 1 Child

• One qualifying child (age 14)

• Parent AGI: $75,000 (well under phase-out)

• Previous CTC: $2,000

• OBBB CTC: $2,200
